[1] Aboriginal Mapping Network (AMN)

AMN was established in 1998 as a joint initiative of the Gitxsan and Ahousaht First Nations and Ecotrust Canada. Its mandate is to support aboriginal and indigenous peoples facing issues such as land claims, treaty negotiations and resource development, with tools such as traditional use studies, GIS mapping and other information systems. The website is a resource for practitioners of traditional knowledge mapping around the world. You will find background information and resources on mapping, mapping tools, maps, publications, documents, links, etc.

 

[2] Indigenous Environmental Network

IEN was formed by grassroots Indigenous peoples and individuals in the United States to address environmental and economic justice issues. It seeks to support Indigenous communities in North America - and in recent years globally - in protecting sacred sites, land, water, air, natural resources, health, and in building economically sustainable communities. The website contains information on a broad range of environmental issues.

 

[3] Tebtebba Foundation

Tebtebba (Indigenous Peoples’ International Centre for Policy Research and Education) is an Indigenous organization based in the Philippines. Among others, its website includes information on land and resource issues, mining and extractive industries, free, prior and informed consent, etc. You will also find Indigenous peoples’ declarations on these issues.

[6] Report of the UN workshop on indigenous peoples, private sector natural resource, energy and mining companies and human rights, Geneva, December 2001 [S,F,R]

The workshop was organized by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in collaboration with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Contained in the report are the Conclusions and Recommendations adopted by the workshop.

 

[7] Development Gateway – “Indigenous Issues: Natural Resources and Land” site [S,F]

The Development Gateway is an internet portal that serves to facilitate exchange of information on development issues, including Indigenous issues. [8] UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues – “Workshop on Methodologies Regarding Free, Prior and Informed Consent and Indigenous Peoples” [Documents in S,R,F]

The workshop took place in January 2005 in New York. The website contains all documents from the workshop, including the official report, the agenda, and written submissions by UN Agencies, Indigenous organizations, and Governments.

 

[9] Forest Peoples Programme [Documents in S,F]

FPP supports forest peoples in their struggle to control the use of their lands and resources, and works to put human rights issues at the heart of the debate about forests. FPP produces a wide range of documents and reports on Indigenous peoples’ issues, including lands and resources, land rights, Private Sector and Extractive Industries, among others. The site also contains related Indigenous peoples’ Declarations and other Indigenous documents.

 

[10] World Bank Extractive Industries Review [Documents in S,F,R]

The EIR was launched by the World Bank Group in 2001 to discuss its future role in the extractive industries with concerned stakeholders. The aim of this independent review was to produce recommendations to guide involvement of the WBG in the oil, gas and mining sectors. The EIR’s report “Striking a Better Balance” was completed in 2003 and contains a number of potentially far reaching recommendations about how human rights, including indigenous peoples’ rights and the principle of free, prior and informed consent should be respected in WBG policies and operations. [11] International Alliance of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples of the Tropical Forests [S,F]

The IAITPTF is a worldwide network of organisations representing indigenous and tribal peoples living in tropical forest regions (Africa, Asia-Pacific, and the Americas). The website contains information and resources on environmental issues such as traditional forest-related knowledge, biodiversity, climate change, etc.

 

[12] Indigenous Women's Biodiversity Network (IWBN) [Documents in S]

IWBN is a network of indigenous women working on environmental issues. It is co-organized by the African Indigenous Women's Organisation and the Netherlands Centre for Indigenous Peoples. The Network has as its goal to promote and ensure the active participation of indigenous women in international environmental fora. It seeks to promote the important role of indigenous women in the protection of the environment. On the website you will find Indigenous women’s statements on environmental issues.

The purpose of this website is to promote better understanding of indigenous perspectives on water and development, and to enhance dialogue between indigenous peoples and the agents of water resources development.

 

[16] World Water Forum

The World Water Forum takes place every three years and is the main international event on water issues. It is organized by the World Water Council, an international multi-stakeholder platform consisting of more than 300 members including public and private sectors, NGOs, and UN agencies. See the Indigenous Peoples Kyoto Water Declaration delivered at the 2003 World Water Forum in Kyoto, Japan.

 

[17] The World Conservation Union (IUCN) [S]

IUCN, the world’s largest conservation network, brings together States, government agencies, NGOs and experts in a worldwide partnership to influence and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. IUCN aims to ensure full participation of indigenous peoples in all of its conservation activities. The site contains a vast amount of resources and information related to Indigenous peoples. [18] Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) website [S,F]

Website of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity. [20] UNEP, Division of Global Environment Facility Coordination (DGEF) – “Support to Indigenous Peoples” site

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) was established as a joint programme between UNEP and the World Bank to help solve global environmental problems. The GEF portfolio comprises a number of projects, which involve indigenous groups. This website provides summaries of these projects.

 

[21] IISD Linkages - a multimedia resource for environment and development policy makers

This website hosted by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) provides information and news on a broad range of environment and sustainable development issues, including coverage and reports from international meetings, publications, documents, notices, etc.

The site also contains a lot of resources on Indigenous issues.

 

[22] United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) [S,F,R]

UNFF is an intergovernmental policy forum to promote “the management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests and to strengthen long-term political commitment to this end”. Indigenous peoples participate in this process as one of the 9 recognized “major groups” of stakeholders.

 

[23] United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) website [S,F]

Website of the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. It contains information on meetings related to the Convention, official documents and reports, and essential background information on global warming, among others. The website also serves for communicating information related to the Kyoto Protocol (an addition to the Convention).

 

[24] Ramsar Convention on Wetlands website [S,F]

Website maintained by the Ramsar Convention Secretariat. The Ramsar Convention is a treaty, which provides a framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.  Upon joining the Convention, each Contracting Party is obliged to designate at least one wetland site for inclusion in the List of Wetlands of International Importance (the “Ramsar List”).

The UNESCO Water Portal is intended to enhance access to information related to freshwater available on the World Wide Web. The site provides links to current UNESCO programmes on freshwater and serves as an interactive point for sharing, browsing and searching websites of water-related organizations, government bodies and NGOs, including a range of categories such as water links, water events, learning modules and other on-line resources.

[29] United Nations System-wide Earthwatch

The “United Nations System-wide Earthwatch” mechanism is a broad UN initiative to coordinate and catalyze environmental observation activities among all UN agencies for integrated assessment purposes. Through this mechanism, UN agencies work together on global environmental issues, by exchanging and sharing environmental data and information. [30] Center for International Environmental Law

CIEL is an NGO working to use international law and institutions to protect the environment, promote human health, and ensure a just and sustainable society. CIEL’s program areas include Climate Change, Biodiversity, Biotechnology, Trade and Sustainable Development, International Financial Institutions, Law and Communities, Persistent Organic Pollutants, and Human Rights and the Environment. The website includes background information and a large amount of publications on all of these topics.

[31] OHCHR “Indigenous Peoples” site – Documents on Indigenous Heritage [S,F]

“Heritage” section of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ site containing documents on Indigenous issues. Among others, the site contains documents related to the Special-Rapporteur on the Protection of the heritage of indigenous people (Special Rapporteur: Erica-Irene Daes), the 1997 Technical Meeting on the Protection of the Heritage of Indigenous People, and the 2000 Seminar on draft principles and guidelines for the protection of the heritage of indigenous people.

 

[32] International Symposium “Conserving Cultural and Biological Diversity: The Role of Sacred Natural Sites and Cultural Landscapes” (United Nations University, Japan, 30 May - 2 June 2005)

The Symposium was jointly organized by various UN Agencies including UNESCO and the Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. The website provides background information, summary reports, and other symposium results and documents.

This database contains examples of successful projects illustrating the use of indigenous knowledge in the development of cost-effective and sustainable survival strategies. It also includes a geographical and thematic index and an index of institutions acting as indigenous knowledge resource centres. The aim of the database is to make available information on projects in which indigenous knowledge plays an essential and practical role, so that other people can learn from the experiences.

Official online archive of the World Commission on Dams. The WCD was an independent, international, multi-stakeholder process which addressed the controversial issues associated with large dams.
